Nancy Spero: Dissidances
(Madrid)
15 Oct 2008 - 5 Jan 2009
Nancy Spero is an American artist and activist, known for her impassioned paintings based on feminist themes. The Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid showcases the most significant pieces from her 50-year career in a retrospective titled Dissidances.
The exhibition includes some of Spero's early works from when she attended the Art Institute of Chicago. It was on this learning turf where she met her former husband, artist Leon Golub.
Dissidances progress from Spero's early student days to the recent
Maypole 2007, which she presented at the Venice Biennial. When placed together, the
oeuvre show how Spero has reconstructed the representation of females through her work - from the prehistoric to the modern woman.
