Pieter Saenredam
(Madrid)
11 Nov 2008 - 15 Feb 2009
Pieter Saenredam was a prominent painter during the 17th century and a contemporary of Rembrandt. Most of his works centre on buildings, both interiors and facades. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum exhibition in Madrid showcases a selection of his finely detailed works.
The Dutch painter was known for visiting buildings before he painted them in order to take preparatory sketches and ensure his measurements were accurate. Many of his works are based in Haarlem, his former home town, as well as Assendelf, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Rhenen and Alkmaar.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza exhibition is number 22 in the museum's Contexts of the Permanent Collection series.
